VINYL AND RUBBER WALL BASE
INSTALLATION BULLETIN
These are general recommendations. Specific instructions should be obtained from the wall base manufacturer.
Wall base can be installed over surfaces such as plaster, drywall, plywood paneling, and masonry. Do not apply over non-porous surfaces such as vinyl wall coverings, laminated masonite, or plastic laminates.
SITE CONDITION
The room temperature, wall base, and adhesive should be no less than 65°F for a minimum of 24 hours before, during and after installation.
PREPARATION
All surfaces must be structurally sound, clean, dry, and free from dust, dirt, wax, grease, loose paint, plaster and other contaminants that may interfere with proper bonding.
For best adhesion with Molded Rubber Cove Base, it is recommended to wipe the back of the base with a damp cloth prior to installation. In some cases the back must be sanded to remove the release agents to achieve a good bond.
ADHESIVES
Apply Taylor Envirotec #2040 Premium Cove Base Adhesive or #2035 Cove Base Adhesive uniformly to the back of the base with a 3/32”x3/32”x3/32” V notch trowel. You may also use a three-hole cove base adhesive gun or standard 11 oz. or 30 oz. caulking gun when using cartridges. Adhesive should be spread to within 1/4” of the top of the base. NOTE: These are minimum recommendations. Very uneven or porous surfaces may require a heavier adhesive application.
INSTALLATION
After adhesive application, bond the base to the wall within 20 minutes and roll with a hand cove base roller; making sure a good transfer occurs. WARNING: Cove base must be rolled only in the direction of the last piece of base installed, in order to prevent stretching.
If pre-formed, molded corners are not being used, fit the base to an inside corner, groove it on the inside, fold it at a ninety-degree angle, make outside cuts on the cove section at forty-five degrees, then fit it in place in the corner. To form outside corners when using vinyl cove base, groove the inside of the cove, heat it to make it more pliable, and then bend it around the corner.
