Installing Resilient Sheet Flooring

With MS-Plus Resilient (MSPR) MBA™ (Moisture Barrier Adhesive)

When attempting to perform a resilient sheet flooring installation utilizing the MSPR MBA™ adhesive, different factors and techniques must be recognized. The MSPR MBA™ adhesive contains 100% solids and the viscosity of this adhesive is greater than conventional sheet flooring adhesives used in many installations. Therefore, it is imperative the installation/contractor be aware of the product he is attempting to use and employ the proper installation methods.

When spreading the MSPR MBA™ as a normal installation adhesive or as a moisture barrier, it is imperative to use the trowel recommended by the resilient flooring manufacturer. The trowel should be held at a 45º angle and significant downward pressure must be exerted on the trowel when spreading. If sufficient downward pressure is not exerted during the spreading procedure, the trowel will “float” on top of the adhesive leaving excessive adhesive on the subfloor. An excessive amount of adhesive may cause appearance issues with the final installation. As the adhesive is being spread, the installer will notice the MSPR MBA™ has a tendency to self-level and “flow” together, creating the adhesive barrier coating. It is also recommended to use a professional grade trowel and not one of the disposable trowels. It is also suggested that a limited amount of adhesive be deposited on the subfloor prior to spreading. By limiting the amount of adhesive on the subfloor, the installer does not have as much adhesive that he has to move throughout the installation, and thus less chance of the trowel floating while spreading.

After properly spreading the adhesive, the resilient sheet flooring should be laid into the adhesive, working from the center outward, essentially the same method as when installing resilient sheet flooring with an epoxy adhesive. The flooring should not be allowed to just drop into the adhesive, as this can cause air bubbles to be trapped between the adhesive and the resilient sheet flooring. These trapped air bubbles will be difficult to be rolled out if this should occur. The best installation procedure will be to not trap any air bubbles between the adhesive and the resilient sheet flooring during the installation procedure.
